Fun With Macs

Ok In the last two years I have slowly been coming over to the dark I mean Mac side of thinking. I really like that OSX is Unix based and I really like the look and feel of X as well. I even like some of the software Apple has been producing and I think Itunes is superior to Win media player simply b/c Apple was smart enough to make two apps to do two diff. things i.e. Itunes and quicktime instead of win media that tries to do everything but nothing very well. SO since I knew I was going to be getting an Ipod I made the switch to Itunes on my pc's so that I could start getting used to the look and feel and also so that the transition to the ipod would be a quick and easy one. So since nobody ever writes about whats great in the world here is my weee rant.

I have found one of the flaws in Apple. Corrupted files. Yes I know that files get corrupted in a windows environment too but the funny thing is you never hear about it. They dont crash your whole computer, they dont take up all your RAM and clock cycles while you wonder ??? whats wrong. This is most certainly a Mac thing. SO why am I bringing this up. Well right now I am having fun with my ipod. The last couple of weeks it has not been playing well with my laptop and I have done a full system restore 5 times on it. Plus I unistalled Itunes and re-installed. But yesterday I was still having the same problem. Heres what was happening. I would dock my ipod and it would update a couple of songs and then it would just hang. And sometimes it would lock up my whole computer. After really struggling with this for like I said 2 weeks or so I read a post on a board suggesting that this error was caused by a corrupted file possibly system more likely music. Well I have 850+ songs on my ipod. One guy suggested removing them 1 by 1 to try and find the corrupted file! Whatever. SO I thought back to when I started to have the problem and I remember the songs that I was trying to update back then. SO I have restored the ipod again. Removed those tracks from my library and am updating now. Hopefully this will solve my problem and then I can try to figure out which tracks of the ones I removed are corrupted. I just cant believe how much of a problem this has been for me. Well I will probably put a little blurb in later about how the update went. But for now im optimistic.

Game update:
PS1
Parasite eve's bonus level although terribly boring and monotonous is suprisingly addictive. Lisa and I have about 7 levels left before we complete the game and get the alternate ending. Expect a final wrap up maybe monday. I have class tonight so I doubt I will get to play it.

Xbox -- Started playing Metal Arms again and WOW that game is fun. I keep telling my friends who are halo junkies "dude you have to play this...Its like halo....but fun!" Anyway I think the best part of it and even what lisa finds humorous is killing robots. There is just something satisfying about wasting a bot and have it blow up into like a billion pieces all while screaming! ITs such a blast. And the weapons oh the weapons. Halo could learn a lot from the grenade in metal arms. It has a blast radius of like 25-30 feet vs the 5-6 foot radius of a halo grenade. Master Chiefs got some weak weapons. Oh and who cant love a gun names spew. I mean thats priceless ^_^

Quick Link

Just a quick link that I found

This is INSANE! I cant even imagine how much time this took to do but it is unreal how good it looks. If you like cosplay or halo then you have to check this out. I am in awe

Master Chief Suit

Case of the mondays

Well its monday after a three day holiday and yeah my motivation level is nill at best. My weekend wrap-up consists of two primary things.

1. Gaming
2. Cleaning

However both of these took away from what I would have liked to have been a primary event of the holiday which was

3. Sleep

SO its monday morning im dead tired and Im eating a not so good bluberry muffin and I keep wondering why are their no good dance clubs in the Dayton / Cinci area? I cant be the only person in this whole mega-opolis that wants to go to a solid Dance club that plays good electronic dance music like Trance and IDM. I hear Jillians is good but that its a nightmare to get in and out of. And yeah after an evening of clubbing I dont want to wait an hour to get my car so that I can leave. Sigh -- more and more i'm missing things from Florida.

Happy Easter!

Well its easter weekend which means I get friday off!!!! and I dont have to teach my class tonight so its like a really good break for me. Also the timing couldnt be better since the final stages of the move are going to be happening over the course of this weekend. AAAAAANNNNDDD Lisa is taking friday off as well so I am going to have three whole days with my sweetie! sigh pure bliss. ^_^ Anyway hey anyone who is doing the whole Dual Income no kids thing understands where I am coming from and will appreciate the joy in an extra day with your sweetie. SO Hopefully the break will not be all work (boo hisss on work) and we will be able to do something fun like catch a movie or something like that. SO everyone have a great easter!

Game update:

Last night we beat Parasite Eve 1. It was by no means the greatest game ever made and did not have the depth of say a Final Fantasy but it was still pretty good and it is really cool to see the difference a year can make in game development from FF7 to Parasite Eve. Anyway in general I thought the game was pretty fun. I really like the combat system and a limited inventory forces you to mange the items you have wisely. My only complaint comes in the form of something that I had, in the back of my mind, been wanting. Which is a game that actually made you do something in a certain amount of time or else consequences. And Im not talking about putting a timer up on screen so you know how much time you have. I mean you trigger event A something bad is happening and you need to get out like now. Otherwise certain death. Well yeah be carefull what you ask for. Their are two of these such scenarios in the game but unfortunatly they come at the end of rather large and major boss fights. This does not have to be bad and could have been good except for Square only gives you enough time to do the right thing and do it flawlessly. If you mess up at all you are not going to make it out and some event is then triggered that shows why you just died. Heres the bad part -- you then are forced to repeat a long and drawn out battle only to be left wondering what did I do wrong. On the first of the two occurances we tried I think 4x's before getting out and the last one was 3x's and on the third I asked lisa to look at the guide we had b/c I was not going to repeat the 10-15 minute battle a fourth time. But all in all it was a good game. Total time for main quest around 12 hours and their is a bonus fight at the chrysler building I think that I can attempt. SO I will do that as well.

Well I hope to update soon on what new game takes a hold of my time. Someone suggested tactics. However my list was comprised of games I currently have and have not played yet and while I have heard lots of things about tactics it frankly scares me. I hear it is near impossible and I just dont know if thats something I want to start on just yet. Right now im leaning towards Robotech or Metal arms only b/c they will be shorter but FF8 and chrono cross are dueling it out in my mind as we speak.

So I was driving in to work today and......

I got Lance in my pants! Posted by Hello

Ok seriously I was driving to work this morning when I noticed a delivery truck for the Lance brand cracker compnany and in really freakin huge letters on the back of the truck it said "I got Lance in my pants." I almost died laughing -- I cant believe the add campaingns that make it through in this country. My mind is still spinning with all the oh so wrong combacks to that phrase. ^_^

Huge game update. Last night I did it. I finished Final Fantasy VII SO here is my post game wrap up.

WOW!

Ok I will go on more than that. I still cant believe the depth of story of that game. Sure the in game graphics suck compared to anything on the current gen of consoles but c'mon its last gen thats no surprise. However the cg cut scenes were better than anything I have seen on xbox or that I can remember seeing. And the ending oh my gosh the ending. You know I was getting worried on monday b/c I knew I was nearing the end and I had not yet touched disc 3. Well Disc three is where they store the ending. It had to be roughly a 5 min cg cut scene that looked better than any of the other cut scenes in the game. WOW an actual ending. Thats one thing Im getting sick of and that is games not really having an ending. I guess everyone is trying to keep things open to sequels but its like you know if you invest a chunk of time into something you would like to see it have some kind of resolution. Im going to recap some of the better games I have played and contrast their endings.

RPGS
Baldurs gate & baldurs gate II -- both endings sucked. They were like 15 sec Cut scenes that accomplished nothing but setting up for another game and making you feel like you wasted your time for playing in he first place

D&D heroes -- Same as above except you felt like you maybe accomplished something. but again a 15 sec ending.

Fable -- What were they thinking???? I hated the story board art type thing they used instead of cut scenes. C'mon give us something more!

Sudeki -- It was ok I guess. I think it was just a cut scene panning around the world and showing that the world was saved and people were happy. Again less than 30 seconds I do believe

Other games

Halo & Halo 2 -- known for having possibly the worst endings ever. C'mon a 15 second cut scene of master chief on the arc approaching earth?

I will stop now but my point is if people want us to pay money and invest time in a game we need to feel that it ended and ended well thats all.

SO know I have a big decision to make. Which game to start next

FF 8
FF 9
Chrono Cross
Robotech Battlecry
Metal Arms Glitch in the system
Fatal Frame II

All good choices.

Pepsi Vs. Coke

Well I have been, for a long time in favor of Pepsi over Coke. Now ok lets make something clear -- I am not saying that all pepsi products kick the coke counterparts butt. Im Simply saying that given the choice I like the taste of pepsi and vannila pepsi over coke and vannila coke. That being said Pepsi has gone the extra mile in terms of loyalty love. Right now I am downloading my second song off of itunes store that I have gotten free from pepsi and thats pretty freaking cool. I know that downloading music over the net is nothing new but I think its the geek in me that likes the new experiance and trying new ways of doing things and seeing how they work out that has me so entranced by the whole thing. SO I gotta say its pretty cool and its nice to know that its going to be a super good quality version of the song and that their is going to be no glitchyness which is something that is always a possibility with P2P stuff and other ways of acquiring music. SO what did I get with my two pop caps????

ATB - Marakesh
-- ATB is a German Trance artist who does some really great stuff --

Kate Ryan - U R (my love) (Original extended mix)
-- Kate Ryan is from Belgium and has really made a name for herself in the trance world --

Oh my download just finished now comes the best part -- Docking my Ipod so I can listen to my new tracks on my way home!

Well its friday so Have a great weekend everyone!

Game update

Quick game update

Finished Fatal Frame -- finally oh my gawsh that was hard. Their is no way I will play it on fatal mode. But I might go back through in normal and whoop up on stuff. Got the original Japanese ending (which was not included in the PS2 version -- suckers) and that ending was much better and much more Japanese which fits much better with the very Japanese story of the game instead of the crappy americanized ending. Think the ring vs. Ringu. Anyway final thoughts on the game. Purely brilliant. Great game Super hard combat and great story.

Time to beat on Nightmare mode was around 7 hours.

FFVII -- 49.5 hours. Still on disk 2 -- just beat ultimate weapon. WOW that was a hard battle and his final attack did almost 8000 damage to cloud. Needless to say he got wiped but thanks to a tip I got I had him holding all my enemy skill materia so they all learned that super powerful attack. SWEET!

Parasite Eve -- After Fatal Frame I convinced Lisa to hold off on Fatal Frame II so Sara could watch and we started parasite eve. SO far about 4-5 hours in and its pretty fun. Square is an amazing company and I can not believe the cut scenes that they did and how they still wow me and they are from the psone generation. The next gen of consoles is going to be insanely real looking.

Well that's all im playing right now!

What, you mean it has to be plugged in???

Ok it ceases to amaze me how many times a year I am confronted with the same scenario.

caller: my computer cant get to the internet
me: have you tried x, y, z???

Caller: yes I have tried all of that
me: Ok I hate to ask you a stupid question but is your network cable plugged in?

Caller: of course it is!
me: Well I really cant think of much else would you mind checking for me?

Caller: Well I'm sure its plugged in!
me: Well sometimes people trip on cables or custodians unplug stuff so if you wouldnt mind...

Caller: FINE!
me: ......

Caller: (usually laughing now) I dont know how that got unplugged.
Me: Ok thanks for calling bye bye

You know it just blows me away how people will call for help and then cop attitude when you ask them to do or check something. Like ok if you know so much dont call me..oh wait you dont know anything so you did.

On a side note I have called into SBC (local telco) so many times that the operators are starting to know me by my voice and call me by first name. My life is getting scarrier everyday.

LAN party

Because sometimes Death can be cute... Posted by Hello

Well as promised here is a little weekend update.

Friday night I went to my second ever halo / LAN party. It was a lot of fun and I think the fact that it was also a birthday party (so their was lots of soda, snacks, and pizza) made it better than your average Halo / LAN party.

Lets give a moment of silence to Pizza...YUM!

Anyway Got to the party and brought some controllers and my network stuff, a mini hub and four 25' patch cables. All of which turned out to be very usefull as their was a lack of cables and only one hub that was deemed "iffy" SO go me for supplying the net. SO their were going to be 16 people spread out over 4 xboxes which is the max that you can have and I have to say I think that makes it a lot more fun. Although its really crazy b/c people are dying all around you and basically you respawn and either kill someone or are killed instantly. SO that was the night. The average time alive for everyone in each game was 1-1.5 min at a time. SO very fast and frantically paced games.

Now on to how I did.
Well I was not #1 but I was far last place as well. In general I was very much in the middle and I was fine with that. I have hardly played halo 2 at all. I played the campaingn back in December I think and had never played multiplayer. I think I would have done much better if we had played some of the same maps more though. Their was one map that was a favorite and by like the 4th time of playing it I actually started to know where I was and where the good equipment was. That time through I was in the top 5 for kills and I got some medals as well!! Other than that my big accomplishment was a match of capture the flag where I was trailing a teammate giving them cover when they were sniped and I grabbed the flag and made it to our base to score for our team. SO whoo hoo and WOOT WOOT!

Oh and yes I had fun with my tag and my color. I named myself Master Kitty after a piece of art I will try to post in this page. I chose pink as my color and a big pill as my shoulder emblem

It was a lot of fun.

My Art

This is the extent of my creative ability. ^_^ Posted by Hello

Ok I know this has been up for a number of Days now without any explanation so here goes. First off Im experimenting with different ways to add pics into this blog. The blog I am using suggests using this hello service and well yeah. I went to post the pic and had a entry for the day and it cut that out. It also did not look to me like it posted the picture. SO I gave up and decided to try again some other time. It was not until later that I discovered that the pic had in fact posted. ARgggh. SO anyway....

As stated above thats my creative ability. A friend of mine got a Wacom which is a touch tablet for the pc. He was showing it to me and I asked if I could give it a try. And thats what I drew. Free hand with the pen first time. I thought it was really cute so I had him send it to me. And there it is. I still have no idea why I chose to draw a pig or why I captioned it "eat bacon jacko"

SO perhaps I should quite my job as an engineer and become an artist???? nah I think I will stay where I am. ^_^

Hooray for food!

Ok if you know me then you know that I have a wee issue with eating. Like I dont eat very much or very often. This is something that I am trying to correct about myself. SO as of this week I have eaten 3x's each day. WOW its amazing im actually eating. Oh and I worked out today as well. Again go me! SO hopefully I can keep this up.

Game update:
FF VII --playtime 42.5 hours-- Just had my first fight with ultimate weapon and used tifa to delve into the mind of cloud and recover his past and who he is. Its amazing but the story just keeps pulling me in more and more. I dont want to do sidequests, I dont want to raise chocobos, I just want to see what happens next. Man this is addictive. But i am trying to balance all this with character building and sidequests otherwise I will be too weak to face sephiroth in the end.

Other than that I am going to my second halo party ever this friday so I might have to play some halo so I dont get totally spanked. Seeing as im the old guy everyone wants to kill me. I make a great target. Maybe I will make my armor pink or something to make it easier to kill me. Plus its halo 2 which I have played the campaign for but never multiplayer. Oh well I will let you guys know how many times I get killed.

Stupid web page of the day:
http://www.virtualstapler.com/

Major Congrats!

Hey this entry is really just Dedicated to My brother and sister in Japan. Jason and Momoko Ruddy who just announced yesterday that they are going to be having a baby!!! Total Congratulations and Lisa and I are so happy for you! This is really great news and well on a selfish note I needed some good news right about now so Good timing ^_^. Anyway I cant wait to hear more details as you know them and to hear about all the fun things you guys are going through. Again Congratulations!

The world is full of stupid people...

Well I got the pistol so I'll keep the peso's...

Sounds about right to me. Anyway I have to be vague b/c I cant bad mouth people or companies by name for obvious reasons. But heres a little thing that happened today. School A calls up a week ago complaining that the internet is slow. SO I offer to put some monitoring equipment on their network. They say to work out the details with vendor B since they handle all of their network. SO im like fine. I dont particularly care for vendor B but hey this is life right. SO I go and play nice and all the like. Well yesterday and today I start checking the equipment I put on their site and WOW I find something. In fact I find a big something. Something that is sucking up all of their bandwith all the time. SO I call them up and talk to Vendor B and they go oh yeah we know about that. Im like ya do? He then goes on to tell me that they replicate 3 servers across the internet back to their main office. Im like ok. and he goes on to say that every 5 minutes a server in his office checks the servers their for changes and replicates accordingly. However if their is a database change the entire database needs to be replicated which could be several gigs. I just about fell out my chair. Vendor B is notorius for treating everything like a Local Area Network. SO I said oh well theirs the problem have fun with it.

I guess it just ceases to amaze me that their are so many I.T. Companies out there that dont do things the correct way. Or even muck things up to the point that they hurt other things. Yet people keep going back. Its like an abusive relationship in my mind. Oh well guess I just have one more reason to dislike them.

Game update:

Fatal Frame: Finished the second night and wow what a battle that was. One of the joys of playing in nightmare mode is having to fight flawlessly in boss fights b/c if a ghost merely touches you -- you die. SO after about 15 attempts I made it through to the third night. This game is crazy hard and Is the best designed combat to really make you feel helpless. I think the dynamic of having to look through the viewfinder of an old camera takes the whole FPS to a new level. My complaint with FPS's is the lack of peripheral vision and awareness of the environment around you. However all that changes if you were to look through a viewfinder. The combat is just so intense. I cant wait to finish this and start on Fatal Frame II crimson butterfly. It is supposed to be like the spookiest game evuh

Quick update

Well the last week or so has been extremely draining on me both emotionally and physically. the physical side im used to because thats just normal everyday crap like work and life. But the Emotional is like the tip of the iceberg or in my case the sherman tank that broke the camels back. SO in short im wiped and cant say that I care about much at all anymore. On top of that this week looks to be just as busy and will probably not let up at all in terms of stress. Yeah for being grown up! Anyway i find myself more and more wishing that I lived in florida again. I miss the warm weather and the beach. I had some good friends their and I liked working at Embry Riddle. And their was a job opening in the net side of the IT department and I was told I could be considered if I was willing to make a time commitement of like 3-5 years. But I didnt. I moved to Ohio. and now its warm today (warm in relative terms 50-55f) but tommorow snow and lows in the in the 20's. yuck im so sick of all this.

On a more positive note im hoping to get some pics up on this blog to make it more exciting and not so texty so look in the upcoming weeks for that. I already have some fun ideas. WOW FUN!

Today I am a Hunter

Ok my day was starting out like a normal friday. I had things pretty well lined up for my day and what I needed to get accomplished. I got to the office did a quick check of my e-mail and took a quick look at megatokyo. Well then I get a call from my boss who has not gotten to work yet. He tells me that one of our districts is having extreme network problems and that the entire high school has been totally down for roughly 2 days. He wanted to know if I could take the demo from Fluke over to the school and figure it out. I said "of course" I called the school grabbed my gear and I was gone.

My Job is really funny like that. I can totally have my day planned and it can be instanly derailed by a distress call from a school. Oh and just for the record their problem was not our responsibility. What I am about to describe was a favor....

SO I get to the school and instantly I focus on the core of the network and attack. I start using my wonderfull little tool to probe the network and discover every computer type device in the building -- including all wireless gear. The initial results were what I thought. The network was completly saturated with traffic. Boys and girls thats means that a 100 megabyte network was running at a constant 100 MB over every interface. The fluke blew me away. I thought for sure that a machine was infected with a virus and was the source but the fluke told me otherwise. Or actually it didnt tell me anything really. I was getting pretty mad at it wondering why won't it tell me the source of the traffic -- thats its function! Well after I started to look more deeply into their network I realized it was no virus. Thanks to the Fluke I realized it had to be one of two things A malfunctioning switch/hub or a bad Network Interface Card. Now that I knew what I was looking for the hunt was on.

I started disconnecting segments of their net to isolate the problem and when I would find it the source I would continue to drill down deeper and deeper through the layers of their network until finnaly I found the culprit. In a library they had a mini swith. That switch was plugged into itself. What exactly do I mean. Ok picture it a regular patch cable. One end is plugged into port 1 of this little 20 dollar switch. The other end into port 5. This simple SNAFU launched a broadcast storm that brought their entire network to its knees.

Total time to find and eliminate problem -- 2 hours.

So my entire day has been re-written and oh yeah. The hunt is not over. I have another school that its having similar problems of congestion. I wonder what I will find there.

De-motivated

Thats how I feel today. I am kinda tired (for a change I know) and I just really dont feel like doing anything but crawling back into bed. I think the winters are getting harder on me. During the spring / summer / fall I really just hop out of bed in the morning and am set to go. But in the winter I just want to stay in my nice warm bed and sleep. Sigh. problem is I have TONS to do at work and I have to finish my planning for my class tonight. I was good about starting that early this week but have not finished it so now its crunch time. Gotta get it done. Oh and if you like trance music and who doesnt (dont say anything Jason!) then you have got to check out DJ Doboy. WOW he doesnt actually do anything but mix good trance together into long sets but the stuff he mixes flows sooo well. Lisa and I spent last night playing cards and grooving to Vocal edition 2 and that has got to be one my favs. SO check the net and try to find it -- download it -- and set aside an hour or so to give it a listen b/c you have to hear it all the way through.

Gaming update

PSone
Playing FF VII time so far is 38.5 hours. im on disk two and if you have played FF than this will make sense. Cloud just got the stuffing beat out of him and he and tiffa are in an infirmary in the southern most island. Meanwhile I got Cid and the airship and I am looking for BIG materia. This has got to be the best RPG of all time. BIG Thanks to Sara, Paul, And Sue for getting me a PSOne and FFVII for x-mas it has been awesome! After I finish that I will have to choose between continuing on with ff8 or going to chrono cross and then ff8 then 9. SO many choices!

Xbox
Playing through Fatal Frame 1 again in Nightmare to get the japanese ending instead of the sucky american ending. WOW this game is hard and really creeps me out. I think i am almost done with night 2 of the 3 night nightmare.

Playing Robotech battlecry -- This game is insanely hard. but it has short 10-15 minute levels so its good for a quick game session. Oh by the way im still on mission two -- ITS REALLY FREAKING HARD!

"Fluke" not just a catchy name

Well with my job one of the things I get to do is evaluate new equipment for possible purchase. SO I love the company Fluke -- I think they make awesome equipment that like no one else in my industry even comes close to touching. SO I asked for a demo of something that I want to buy and well the price tag on it is 30k so its super pricey so of course I am uber carefull with this thing when it arrives. Well its basically a self contained network discovery tool and analyzer that has full copper, fiber, and wireless capabilities. SO of course im in heaven with this thing on the first day and then on the second day yeah the screen stopped working at all. D'OH! I had a meeting with the rep today and he could not believe it. Said he had never ever seen one do that in the 6 years they have been making them. I wanted so bad to say "so what your telling me is this hardware failure is a fluke?" But I resisted. ^_^ Just thought it was funny. Oh and I did work out today! hopefully I can get back in the habit of going during lunch. That would be good.

Oh and just in case you want to see what it is I was playing with go Here . It is absolutely disgusting what this thing can do.

Rabbit Rabbit!

Well I said that I thought I might update my blog while I was on vacation but yeah I made a huge effort to "unplug" and stay far away from computers. I did however on one day install the vpn client and remote desktop connection client on my friends win 98 machine and then connected to my computer in the office over dial up just to see if I could do it. Yeah I know im a Geek. But that was like all I did with a computer so im pretty happy about that. All in all it was a really odd vacation. Dont get me wrong Lisa and I had a lot of fun and we played a lot of xbox (which kinda makes the vacation diff.) But it was more where we were. We went to this little town in Alabama that appearantly has not been told its not the early 60's anymore. And now I dont mean Jimi was blaring from the street corners and that free love was everywhere. I mean that racisim was super alive and well in this little town. Also they were majorly stuck in the past. It was a total shock to see a town so wrapped up in their old ways. Anyway it just re-affirmed to lisa and I that we never ever want to live in a small little town. (shudder at the thought) Anyway we got back on Friday and lots of stuff has already happened. Most days I just want to crawl under a rock, anyway like I said lots happened. I found out some bad news from my mom and dad and that will be affecting some plans of mine in the next few weeks. Also we found out that a missionary family our church supports was still with out housing in the day / cin area so we are going to let them use our house for two months starting in April. Which means we are moving back in with Grampa and the gang. Should be interesting. Other than that I am dying to work out. I need to work out so badly. Maybe I will use my blog to help keep track of when I work out. Could be good motivation. Well I gotta do some work today. Later!
